      Great question. Something did come up: sadness. As the therapist, we lean into it that verbal utterance, breaking convention and encouraging a recognition of what is happening - the connection to the sadness.

    I'm intelligent, I'm degreed in the medical field, and I still don't practically know what ACT IS after watching this video with soooo many perfect reviews. Can anyone suggest a video that actually says how Act is practically used in daily life with an example... just one. Great, thanks.

    • @TimothyGordon
      @TimothyGordon Месяц назад

      Hello! I’d be happy to make a video for you on this. Can you tell me more about what has you confused? In the meantime, here’s more about how ACT can be used practically in daily life as you asked in your comment. For example, me right here now in this moment, responding to your comment. I’m a person, a social worker, a father, husband, a business owner, a content creator! There’s a voice inside of me that has a great doubt that I shouldn’t be creating a video directly in response to your comment on my RUclips video because you might feel that that calls you out or that it comes off as disingenuous. But my values tell me that putting out accurate, trustworthy and reliable content is the real me! So I have to ask myself who I want to be, do I want to listen to my insecurities and perhaps fuse with them? Or do I want to engage with my values and put myself out there in a way that might feel risky, this comment is the middle ground between responding to your comment and making a video. I’m still open to making the video, because my work is important to me and connecting with you if you’re genuinely looking to learn about ACT matters a lot to me. And if you’re just in the comments trolling, well that’s okay too. Because what happens here doesn’t define how I evaluate my success. I define success based on my freedom to engage with my values. And that’s how I also know I’m truly free. 💛 I hope this helps. I’m here for you @elizabethhollins5988

    • @elizabethhollins5988
      @elizabethhollins5988 Месяц назад

      @TimothyGordon Your question is confusing bc I never said I was confused. My comment stands as is. Seeking a practical examples of its use in daily situations. Ex. Frustrated bc management won't hire staffing to provide safe patient care, they say they've been interviewing. We're being told this for over a year. How does one use ACT that.

    • @TimothyGordon

    A year and a half ago I watched while a friend of mine died in front of me. It was in the front lobby of the hotel I was working at at the time. You know what my boss said to me? "He's not going anywhere now get over here and takeover the shift" I did, worked the next 3 days straight. As of today his lifeless face is the last thing I see before bed and the first thing I think of when I wake up. I cannot find a therapist, I am too messed up to focus and I can think of only one solution to get these thoughts to stop. I want another option, but no one wants to help me, so what the fuck do I do? If I hear, "call this or do that," know that I've tried, numerous crisis lines, intakes, counsellors and stress experts. There is more, a lot more, but that is way more personal than I am willing to share...

We are here to learn lessons. And sadly the best way to do that is by traumas and then healing these traumas. Stay safe! I'm sending hugs.

      Thanks for the question and pardon my delay in responding. I’ve read the book a couple of times. It’s a simple read, easy to understand (unlike ACT, haha!) and integrates smoothly into most peoples lives but misses the mark for many, myself included. I think it could easily be chalked up to: different strokes for different folks. For example, some people don’t “struggle” with negative thinking, they need exposure, perhaps an interoceptive approach or simply prolonged exposure. As rich and nuanced as our mental health struggles and personal lives are, so is the need for good interventions with methodological rigour and accessibility. Said more simply, there’s lot of room in the market for other approaches.

      I appreciate your reply! Yes, I’m pretty knowledgeable with IFS and use it with my clients that have PTSD. The results are astonishingly good. It’s always an amazing experience watching clients heal the exiled parts of themselves during the unburdening process. I think you’re a very talented therapist and you’d be great at IFS if you’re interested in exploring it further. It’s really not that big of a leap from ACT to IFS. I watched a video of you talking about trauma and ACT self-as-context and it sounded a lot like clients unblending and accessing Self Energy as described in IFS, which prompted my question to you.

    What's really cool about act is that it seems like it's something that you can teach yourself over time. And as long as you're willing to continue to practice it like a martial art, you'll become better at it. It's a tool set you can use in almost any situation and it's highly adaptable, I think I found my new therapy method. Thanks for taking the time to explain it. I'm going to watch this multiple times to understand it, but what I'm getting from it is that you're open to the experience or the feeling and then you have a pause and you give yourself time to respond instead of react to it. And you do that through your based on your values. And if you do that, you'll have a better outcome than if you're just reactive This sounds excellent. I have ADHD and I think this could help with that as well! Really like your content. Keep making content for others. It's excellent

    “Trust yourself. Trust your intuition. Know you will always be okay no matter what. You ARE compassionate, and you have such a big heart. Learn to use that for yourself. Love yourself, and I love you. I will always be here for you.”

    Dont get me wrong brother. What i feel about your videos is no doubt they are awesome but you could have explained the problem more intensely how that problem effects our life and how this solution solves that problem . As i obeserved in this series you explained solution very well but you didn't explain problem , how it solves our problem , one or two real life examples and examples of how to integrate them in daily life. Thank you for your work . Good luck

      Yes! You’re absolutely right and I think how thorough you are in explaining what’s missing is useful to me. I made this video series years, and years ago trying not to focus on specific problems but instead the processes. I know now I was wrong to do that because someone who follow’s along can’t apply it as easily. I’m taking some time next year to redevelop material and I think these videos should be at the top of my list! Any suggestions for specific problems I could be addressing?

    I am puzzled by the statement that in order to change one's behavior one needs to dispute or restructure their thoughts. I was under the impression that ACT was a modality that, instead, changes our relationship to our thoughts..... without attention to their contents. I'm a total layperson, who has learned act through self-help books so perhaps I'm misunderstanding the underlying science? Disputing thoughts sounds like CBT... And giving our thoughts the attention to analyze and dispute with them only strengthens them in my completely layperson opinion. Much better for me personally to use defusion.

      You’re correct! You may have misheard me, perhaps I was speaking too quickly, or I simply may have described things in a confusing manner. Your explanation is spot on. 👍🏼

      @@TimothyGordonlike videos on How to practice mindfulness in daily life , mental therapy videos , videos on overcoming mental challenges like (fear , procastination , anxeity issues , depression , stage fear, pain, for example you can take a act practice from those books and explain how to apply them in daily life and how it changes our life) .you know melrobbins(youtube) she makes videos on this kind of things but im not connected to her (cuz i feel like she is talking to some one else) and there is tealswan(youtube) her videos are little good . i know you did "Brief Act practices" series but they are not long enough to connect with us (as it lacks explanation of problems and how this solution solves problem .....) if you dont mind refer their videos but i love to see your videos and 1m subscribers cuz your explanation is good . Brother i downloaded your 30 day yoga challenge videos and i watch them in free time so that i get motivated to do yoga and how to be present while doing so . Thank you from bottom of my heart for your work
